New Scam Targets Professionals' Tax Software Passwords, Security Summit Warns

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently issued a warning to tax professionals to be alert to a new e-mail scam that impersonates tax software providers and attempts to steal usernames and passwords.  Recipients of these e-mails are told that, due to a recent software upgrade, the tax preparer must revalidate their login credentials. It provides a link to a fictitious website that mirrors the software provider's actual login page. However, instead of upgrading software, the tax professionals are providing their information to cybercriminals who use the stolen credentials to access the preparers' accounts and steal client information.

Security Summit to Tax Professionals: Stay Vigilant

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS), as part of the Security Summit, is urging tax professionals to stay vigilant with regard to a variety of e-mail scams and "spear phishing" that aim to steal personal information about clients and companies.  Between January and May 2017, some 177 tax professionals or firms reported data thefts involving thousands of clients' information.

Nearly $8.8 Million IRS Phone Scam Leads to 8 Arrests

On April 25, 2017, eight suspects were arrested in Miami, Florida, by agents of the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) and the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General (SSAOIG) for conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The indictments against these individuals include charges for involvement in schemes to impersonate IRS agents in order to obtain money from victims by falsely representing that the victims owed back taxes or other fees. The suspects allegedly defrauded over 7,000 victims out of almost $8.8 million.

Federal Form W-2 Phishing Scam is Growing

The IRS recently alerted employers to a dangerous new e-mail phishing scam involving false requests for payroll information made through "spoof" accounts. This scam "can result in the large-scale theft of sensitive data that criminals can use to commit various crimes, including filing fraudulent tax returns," said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued an urgent warning to tax professionals regarding yet another e-mail scam, this time involving a fake website related to the IRS' e-Services accounts.

Major Advance to End IRS Tax Scams - 61 Indicted on $50 Million Conspiracy

The Department of Justice unsealed an indictment today charging 61 individuals and entities for their alleged involvement in a call center scam that has victimized tens of thousands of U.S. citizens and resulted in losses totaling in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Twenty individuals were arrested in the U.S. and other individuals and entities in India were charged with conspiracy to commit identity theft, false personation of an officer of the United States, wire fraud, and money laundering.

IRS Delays Update to E-Services Accounts

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced today that it will delay the date on which e-Services users will be required to re-register and validate their identities (previously discussed here). There is no new implementation date set. The IRS will need more time to discuss security protocols with "key stakeholders" in order to ensure a smooth transition. Beware! Scammers Send Fake IRS E-Mail Messages to Taxpayers

Taxpayers and tax professionals across the U.S. are being targeted by yet another scam.  The Internal Revenue Service and its Security Summit partners recently issued a warning regarding fake e-mails purporting to contain an IRS tax bill related to the Affordable Care Act.  The scam has already been reported to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration for investigation.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently released a YouTube video for tax professionals to learn about the increase in cybercriminal activity targeting tax-related businesses and their data, and steps professional can take to protect their clients from identity theft. IRS Warns of Surge in Summertime Scams

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued a new warning for taxpayers about this year's unprecedented increase in attempted tax fraud. This summer has seen an increase in "robo-calls," where scammers leave threatening voicemail messages. When taxpayers call back, they are threatened with arrest, deportation, or revocation of their driver's license for non-payment.
